Q: Live in Chicago Burbs…Buying 2001 Honda Civic?
Can someone recommend the most reputable used car dealerships in Chicago?
ALSO I’m looking to purchase a 2001 Honda Civic. I would like to spend no more than $4K-$5K, but I don’t want the mileage too high. I’m checking out Cars.com and Craigslist. Can anyone explain the big range in prices? Literally $3,500 to $5,500. Any tips on negotiating and making sure I don’t get a car that’s got problems?? Thanks

A: I live in the Crystal Lake area and had a good experience at Biggers Mazda, in Elgin.
Don’t know what their used inventory looks like, though.

The range in prices is common. Some dealers price their cars competitively and some price them way too high with the expectation that you will talk them down.
Used cars are always subjective because they basically sell for whatever people will pay for them.

You should use nada and edmunds TMV to come up with an an average and base it on that.

Q: Is it better to shop for a used car in the Chicago suburbs instead of in Chicago?
As far as going to dealerships is concerned…

A: go on “CARS.COM”…..YOU CAN LOOK AT CARS ON LINE, WITH PICTURES, IN A “RADIUS SEARCH” OF A CERTAIN DISTANCE FROM YOUR HOME………good luck

Q: Question about car dealerships?
Does anyone know if a hole-in the wall, piece of crap small used car dealership would use the mafia/mob for a bank? The reason I ask is because I am trying to get financed for a car, the dumb criminal salesman is a big Italian. Well he tells me to get me a “good interest” rate he will go through a bank in Chicago and that I was automatically approved. When I asked the bank name, he told me some place I never heard of. I live in central Florida. Anyway wasn’t sure if these idiots could use the mafia/mob for banks? Please let me know so I can decline, as my credit is trashed and there’s pretty much no other possible way I could get approved for $200 a month on a car.

A: Those “hole in the wall” dealerships have many different tricks that they use so they can finance people with bad credit.. here are some:

They will give you a payment you can afford.. but they’ll spread it out over many many many months/years so that in the long term it will cost you way more and sometimes DOUBLE what the car is worth

In going with the one above this – they will charge you WAY more for a junk car that is going to fall apart than it’s worth and it will end up falling apart after six months.. then they’ll make money because you’ll be bringing the vehicle into their repair shop and they’ll tell you it needs way more repairs than it really does.. (never take your vehicle to a dealership repair shop.. they will straight out eff you)

They will give you payments that you cannot afford because they know that you will be able to pay it for a couple months and then they’ll repo the vehicle and resell it to someone else

they lie. period. they will tell you your interest rate is 5% and then when you sign the papers it turns out your interest rate is really 31%…

They tell you they have guaranteed credit approval.. what they mean is they guarantee they’ll approve you.. but often you’re “approved” with $1000 down or more..

Bottom line is.. they probably aren’t going through the mob.. they’re just using horrible tricks to get your money. If you have bad credit and HAVE to go through a place like this.. make sure you go to kbb.com and see how much the vehicle is worth.. then negotiate the price first.. once you’ve talked about the price.. negotiate the interest rate and your payments and the LENGTH of your payments to ensure that after all the years you’re paying it equals the initial price you agreed on.. Also – THiS IS VERY IMPORTANT – READ EVERY SINGLE PAPER before you sign anything.. if they try and rush you then just get up and walk out.. they will come chasing after you because they want a sale. do not let them control you..

With the economy the way it is right now – they’re the one that NEEDS you to buy a car.. don’t let them make you feel the other way around. Make sure you write down everything they tell you and compare it to the papers before you sign anything.. they will do whatever they can to make a dollar.

Good luck!

I bought a car from Volkswagen in Chicago from a private party. The car had been serviced at the dealership from which it was purchased in Chicago. Will VW dealers in my area (Milwaukee) have access to the repair history for this car?

A: Only the warranty history. Private transactions will not normally show up on another dealerships’ computer system.

Q: John Wayne Gacy in my life…is it strange?
Is it strange that my dad and my uncle sorta seen John Wayne Gacy before he was caught? My family is in the Chicagoland area. My dad said he saw him at a car dealership in Chicago when he was there hanging out with his buddies that worked there. I don’t remember what kind of car my dad said he drove, it might’ve been a Cadillac, but after John Wayne Gacy left, one of the guys that was working there was making imitations of him. My dad said that when John Wayne Gacy opened the trunk of his car to get something or put something in it, he saw bags of lime. My dad knows how to do concrete, and in his days past of doing concrete, he never used lime. He thought it was strange. My uncle said that John Wayne Gacy once pulled up to him on the side of the road and tried to lure him into the car he drove – the same one my dad saw. He declined. My dad pointed out to me (a few years ago) where John Wayne Gacy’s car was located – in a car storage lot near his house in Chicago – before it was sent to the scrapper. I actually saw it through a fence, very near the street. I find this all too creepy. Is it strange?

A: No, it’s really interesting when meeting people, who have had these similar encounters. It’s something your dad will never forget.

Q: Hi: Does anyone know anything about or in the past has Dealt With “Haggerty Ford” in West Chicago, IL?
Any reviews or experience with this Car Dealership “Haggerty Ford” and are they a good company to purchase a Vehicle from located in West Chicago, IL ?

Thanks Community.

A: All car dealerships pretty much work the same way, they want to squeeze every last penny, from the sales price right down to the financing and trade in. What you need to do is find someone you know who is good at haggling and take him with you to negotiate. It would even be worth it to pay someone who knows all about it a few hundred to come with you, you’ll save thousands.

Q: Other than Craigslist, How can I find more customers in chicago area that have bad credit and need a car?
I work at a “buy here pay here” dealership and I am trying to find more customers that need a car. What else can I do (cheaply or free) that can generate more customers for me?
Monique: Email me

A: You could go over to the payday lender, unemployment line or food pantry and hand out your business card. (You’re basically asking how to be an ambulance chaser in a financial sense.)

Q: Question about dealerships?

A: If ANYONE does not tell you the name of the lending institution, they are breaking federal law. A person has the rightr to know. I’d ask one more time. If the answer is still vague, turn around and run, RUN! to the door.

Q: how long after buying a car from a dealership, can I return it if I don’t want it?
Bought a car on Monday, it’s already giving me problems. Can I return it to the dealer for a full refund of my down payment? or will they give me the run around. I live in Chicago.
the car has a 3month dealer warranty and i bought an extended 2 yr. the car is a 2001 and i haven’t even made the first payment. I don’t want them to fix the problem because this is already a bad sign.

A: Nope, sorry, but you can’t. You have bought the car. As soon as you sign the papers, you are the owner. As others have said, there is no “3 day” return period, which you are past anyway. You also have purchased a used vehicle, so lemon laws don’t apply… and you have to give 3 chances & 30 days to have the problem fixed before you could even claim that on a new car. Take your car in to the dealer & have it repaired under warranty.
The only possibility if you go in calmly & politely, the dealer may be nice & consider it, IF they haven’t sent any of the paperwork to the state yet & the finance company hasn’t processed the paperwork. It’s been a week though, so I think you are most likely out of luck on that one.

Q: Do new car prices vary from state to state?
I live in Chicago and am planning on buying a new car. Indiana is about 15 minutes away and I’m wondering if I would get a better deal from there. I know that dealerships in the suburbs are cheaper than ones in the city. But would another state offer better deals?

A: Prices do vary by state. The difference is there will be no discount between the 2 areas as they are so close to each other. Areas where the economy suffers sometimes have smaller incentives compared to others. Most incentives are also based on regions and not states. why don’t you research your car online at edmunds.com or go to the manufacturers website and do the same as well as check incentives for your region by typing in your zip code. You can then, if you research other zipcodes, check incentives there to see if different.
